Assessing the Opportunity: Qualified Opportunity Zone Investing

Virtus CFO Will Strong explores the program, its intentions, and how Virtus is considering the opportunity it presents.

The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act made a splash for many reasons, including a unique tax incentive that enables investors to defer or avoid taxes on capital gains when investing in newly identified “opportunity zones.”  The program’s aim is to promote specified low-income communities that have clear growth potential and have historically been underserved by private industry.  It comes as no surprise that many are eager to take advantage of the incentives given.  However, the long-term hold requirements, coupled with heavy value-add and development-like risk profiles has Virtus questioning how attractive the opportunity really is.
