About Virtus

Virtus Real Estate Capital is one of the longest tenured private equity real estate fund managers in the U.S. focused exclusively on cycle resilient needs-based property sectors, such as healthcare, education, storage, and middle-income workforce housing. The Firm was founded in 2003 in Austin, TX. The Firm has acquired or developed more than 300 commercial properties totaling over $7 billion throughout the U.S. Virtus is known across the industry for its deep expertise in social infrastructure sectors and its commitment to people, which is driven by a strong corporate culture around its four core values: Thoughtful Evolution, Resilience, Honorable Action, and Purposeful Work.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Data Engineer to own and grow the Firm’s internal data infrastructure, automation, and AI tooling. This is a hands-on, cross-functional role — you’ll work directly with every business unit (legal, construction, accounting, asset management, acquisitions, research, investor relations) to identify manual or error-prone workflows and build the tools, pipelines, and AI-integrated systems that fix and automate them.  You’ll act as both a builder and a trusted internal consultant, translating business problems into deployed, adopted solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain internal web tools, dashboards, and automation pipelines (Python, SQL, React/Flask, Excel) that replace manual processes across the Firm.
  • Own and manage the Firm’s data warehouse and ELT — schema design and data cleaning through Dagster, DBT, and Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Integrate AI tooling (Claude/LLM APIs, MCP servers) into internal systems to enable plain-language querying and document/data processing.
  • Manage cloud infrastructure (AWS EC2/S3 or Azure equivalents) supporting internally deployed applications.
  • Meet regularly with Business Unit leads to scope new tools, gather requirements, and train users — adoption and trust-building are core to this role, not an afterthought.
  • Develop and maintain ML models (e.g., regression/classification) supporting research and acquisitions use cases.
  • Document data definitions, calculations, and system architecture as the Firm’s data footprint grows.
  • Serve as a point of contact for external technical/AI consultants and vendors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field (Math, CS, Data Science, or related).
  • 1–4 years of experience in a data engineering, data science, analytics engineering, DataOps, or technical consulting role.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Understanding of Git/GitHub for version control.
  • Experience with at least one cloud platform (AWS or Azure).
  • Exposure to AI/LLM tooling (APIs, prompt-based automation).
  • Strong communication skills — comfortable presenting technical work to non-technical stakeholders and leadership.
  • Real estate, private equity, or financial services experience a plus.
